Bruce Thomas Memoirs “Rough Notes”

Most that know me, know that I'm a huge Elvis Costello and The Attractions fan. I first saw the group on SNL in 1977 and was quite impressed by this scrappy combo, and especially by the bass player, who appeared (on my small TV) to be quite young, but really man-handled his Fender Precision. Once I heard "This Years Model" I was hooked and the next eight albums consistently occupied my turntable. For me as a bass player, his work has influenced me more than any other. Bruce says: It follows my career from the paper-round I did to buy my first guitar, and see the Beatles — all the way through to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame …and beyond. Obviously a major part of the book recalls my time as an Attraction. There are the background stories to all the albums we made — which answer a lot...

The Sexy Accident records “Lavender 3” at Westend!

The Sexy Accident's fifth long-player, comprising twelve lush, reverberant love songs marinated in a sea of voices, strings, vintage keyboards, deep bass and obscure, alternate-tuned guitars. Westend is the perfect place for a project like Lavender 3. We record as a whole band, so we work out the equipment - up to 14 channels at once! Most project studios can’t accommodate that kind of thing. We used pretty much every mic there (including some esoteric ones) and benefited from the proper isolation for drum sounds, guitar sounds, vocals, etc. Steve was able to do some neat things with mic placement to vary the drum sound from track to track, and it would’ve been impossible to do that if he couldn’t hear what he was doing as he did it! Plus, Westend’s tape machine makes guitars and cymbals sound fantastic. It’s almost hard to get an overly-harsh guitar sound with tape....

Joey Skidmore’s “Kiki meets the Vampires” Theme Mixed at Westend

"Like the rest of my records, most of 'Joey Skidmore Now!' was recorded with the late, great Lou Whitney in Springfield, MO--my hometown; however, the basic tracks for the theme-song of 'Kiki Meets the Vampires' were recorded with Les Fossoyeurs (the Gravediggers) at Studio Marcadet in Paris, and mixed with Justin Mantooth at Westend Studios, K.C. KS.  Lou (Whitney) had actually worked with me at Westend in the early '90s, finishing up 'Joey Skidmore' for French blues label Dixie Frog Records, and Mike at Westend had been working with me transferring all my old masters into the digital domain for an upcoming anthology project.  Les Fossoyeurs were thrilled with Justin's mix of 'Kiki Meets the Vampires (Vampire Girls),' and the mastering job by John R. Rivers (the late Nikki Sudden's producer) in Leamington Spa, U.K., was equally good!  Although Les Fossoyeurs were unable to attend the Kansas City red-carpet premiere...
